His early life was marked by the 2011 shooting death of his brother, Nigel Caine, an event that significantly influenced his later focus on legal reform and social justice. His primary literary work, The 13th Juror: Canada’s Worst Modern Miscarriage of Justice, serves as both a memoir and a critical analysis of the Canadian judicial system. The book details his personal legal battles and provides a narrative on systemic issues within the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
Following a period of incarceration where he reported human rights violations, Sommerz successfully petitioned the African Canadian Legal Clinic. In 2016, he became the first Afrocentric Canadian elected to conduct independent convocation with the United Nations, addressing the treatment of people of African descent within the Canadian carceral system.
